With regard to openings, studying them is paramount when considering what to use for a tournament.
For more than 20 years, I have been a strong supporter of the Torre Attack when playing as white. I have decided to remain that way for the upcoming tournament in June. It's easier to refine one's knowledge on something known then something unknown.
Recently I have taken interest in the Pirc defense and like it's uniqueness on how to tackle e4 openings. In a way it's similar to the Caro-Kann, but just different. For d4 (and even the English Opening - c4) I have concluded that the Dutch defense is more my style and am pondering the long standing Leningrad version of it since I get immediate kingside castling and strong attacking potential with it. I'm even considering the QGD - Lasker's Defense since I used to play it when I was younger.
On the correspondence end of things (to include general study) I plan on learning the Ruy Lopez and start to take after Bobby Fischer. Who else to learn from - right? If I encounter the Sicilian, I haven't a clue although I have a book on the English Attack which I plan to take a look at. Hopefully, that will be enough material for me.
So there it is...
As White:
- The Torre Attack (and it's cousins)
- Ruy Lopez and English Attack (both are study only for now)
As Black:
- Pirc Defense
- Caro-Kann
- Dutch Defense (including the Leningrad variation)
- Lasker's Defense in the QGD
I will say the most intriguing openings are the Pirc and Leningrad Dutch as neither are seen much..
If anyone has any other ideas please comment. Any of your knowledge will be taken into great consideration when I work on this material
Cheers,
James
